YHC rolled in around 0500 to do some Pre Yoga and such and noticed Red Skull frantically getting the mud ready.  Apparently, the auto start hadn’t been affected by the time change yet and needed some attention.  The 413 guys slowly started making there way out to the smoking lounge, er picnic tables as YHC, Porcelain et al regaled them with tales of pain.

0530 Time to Circle up for Disclaimer and the beginning to what would be a Primer on the Weight v Wait homonym of a Q.

As we circled up YHC called out 8 Count Body Builders to start so the explanation of the W v. W concept could be laid out.  Twist was that the “wait” on the 8 Count Body Builders was at #3, the down portion of the Merkin.  That got pretty old, pretty quick and the weight of our bodies soon set in.  Nevertheless, we pushed through to 13, grabbed both shovel flags and headed out.

Partner Up one F3er w one 413er and we’re off.  Mosey’d it about .20 miles out from the StartEx and circled up across from the STEM graffiti wall for

TIME

NMM: YHC must admit, that wasn’t as much of a Woggler as YHC had intended but it probably was a good intro into F3 for the 413 guys.  I really love the Weight v Wait idea and think it works well not just when we are with the 413 guys but in our everyday.  Paul talks about it in his second letter to the Corinthians, as the “seen v the unseen”.  Anyway, great work this AM and YHC looks forward to many more bruisers at The Stronghold with the HIM in training.

BH: 12th Man lunch tomorrow.  $20 at Richland CC.  We are in a different room tomorrow so just be sure to have Situational Awareness.

East Side looking to get an AO up and running.  Hit up Bro @ Law for details but be aware, it is still early in the gestation period.

Three more days for IronClad Double Glove edition, if you are like YHC probably a good time to start tallying your posts and such.

March 12th Man CONTEXT

CONTEXT

Def: 1. The part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning.  2. The circumstances in which an event occurs; a setting.

I want to focus particularly on these words in the definition of CONTEXT … surrounds, meaning, circumstances…a TRUE LEADER exercises CONTEXT when he has a framework for how he lives his life, for how he does what he does and understands how this will allow HIM to leave a legacy.  Make no mistake, we will all leave a legacy. There are three distinct paths that legacy can follow: 1) a continuation on a positive path set before us by our fathers, mentors, et. al 2) turning a negative path bestowed upon us by our fathers or society into a positive trajectory or 3) abdicate that trajectory to societies unquenchable thirst for consumerism, for Me and for a “this is as good as it gets” attitude.

This morning in a discipleship group that I am a part of, Big Pharm made this profound statement: “Society has made it common to be Inconsistent, Aimless, Secular and Prideful.”  If we don’t TRULY LEAD by some sort of CONTEXT, framework, guardrails, ethos our legacy will be doomed to either a) follow in societies footsteps or b) put in the hard work we should have shouldered.

Quick review from last week on CLARITY: clear overall priorities to give CONTEXT to your life.

“Most people surveying the world around them today see only chaos.  They suffer a sense of personal powerlessness and pointlessness. Individuals need life structure.  A life lacking in comprehensive structure is an aimless wreck. The absence of structure breeds breakdown.  Structure provides the relatively fixed points of reference we need.”

Alvin Toffler

I firmly believe that the word structure in the above quote can very easily be substituted for CONTEXT.

“Without CONTEXT, every decision that confronts us, every situation we encounter, call for unnecessary and unproductive conflict.  Which, in turn, makes our lives much more challenging than they need to be.”

Pat Lencioni

Think about that in terms of something as simple as whether or not to post in the morning.  Timely example, I was out with a buddy on Wednesday night, had a few more beers than normal for a Wednesday, got in bed much later than normal for a Wednesday but still got up at the appointed time my alarm went off for The Standard on Thursday.  Why is that? I had already worked out three times this week plus some double downs, I am scheduled to Ruck the Scorpion on Saturday, surely I could take one day off. I posted on Thursday because I had already committed, I knew HIM were expecting me and I knew that if I didn’t I would regret not being there.  So, my alarms, my clothes set out, are my CONTEXT for not Fartsacking.

That’s not to say that CONTEXT is some sort of magic potion to keep things smooth, easy and Osteen.  More like CONTEXT allows us to stay focused on our mission at hand knowing that we will encounter challenges along the way but if we know our Why, What, How and Who we can be prepared for the unexpected.

“A man must have a battle to fight, a great mission to his life that involves and yet transcends even home and family.  He must have a cause to which he is devoted even unto death, for this is written into the fabric of his being.”

John Eldredge

If that statement is true, if we all agree to it then what happens next?  Do we nod our heads, say “Hell Yeah” but then go back to our NCAA brackets, our fantasy baseball leagues and bullshitting with each other?  Or do we ask what’s next? Do we put on the full armor of God and move out into the world boldly? Yes, yes we do but not without a battle plan or CONTEXT for why we are in the Arena.  What battle looks like today? What we are here to protect so we can stay in the game?

What tactics will you rely upon to accomplish the mission?  Tactic as defined by Merriam Webster

“A procedure or set of maneuvers engaged in to achieve an end, an aim or a goal.”

Those tactics are the CONTEXT of how you live your life.  The procedures, the steps to accomplish an end.

Some of the HIM of F3 that we know have a CONTEXT by which they step into battle, this is what I have learned…

PAX: Grisham

In full disclosure, I pulled this from an email that Grisham sent me earlier this year in which he got very specific on his goals broken down to the day and as far out as the next 10 years.  I have redacted that document and will share now what he refers to as his daily goals but that I see as his CONTEXT for living his life. This is the CONTEXT by which he accomplishes his weekly, monthly and annual goals: His relationship with his Maker, his M, Family, Health, Work, Chores, Finances, Personal Growth and Friends.  You see, Grisham can’t step out into battle on a daily basis if the CONTEXT of his life isn’t in alignment. I can’t speak specifically for Grisham but empirical data would suggest that if all of those puzzle pieces aren’t connected he won’t win the day.

PAX: DREDD

The Nation’s Nantan, DREDD, often talks about CONTEXT in the 43 Feet podcast, in the book Freed to Lead as well as in other mediums.  While DREDD uses the terminology Guardrails, I would argue that we are talking about the same thing, CONTEXT.

In episode 4 of the 43 Feet podcast, DREDD introduces the concept of Get Right with the podPaxers, as in get upright, the righting of a ship and orienting it properly towards the correct port.  Without being upright in relation to the world you won’t have any perspective that something is off kilter (Red Pill). Now that you are properly aligned you can begin to put up what DREDD refers to as Guardrails that are to give CONTEXT to your life.  Once that is in place, you can now accelerate and head as fast as we want to towards that ultimate goal at the end of the line. There will be waypoints along your route, time hacks to celebrate along the way…in the same way you will hit potholes, run into roadblocks and you will need to adjust so that your CONTEXT is in place.

In an abbreviated study of DREDD, his CONTEXT starts with his relationship with his Maker.  If the guardrail of proper sleep isn’t up, he misses that quiet time and in his words, the rest of his day doesn’t align properly.  In the same way, if he isn’t texting his LBZ to his shieldlock on a daily basis, he knows he is on the boat to fat guy island.

A final leadership lesson on CONTEXT from DREDD comes from his admission of knowing his JESTER of anger, realizing that there are seven specific situations he needs to avoid in order to not get angry.  Certainly there are other daily things that can trip him up but these seven are the ones he avoids at all costs. He does that as a highly regimented (CONTEXT) man.

At times, I think of CONTEXT as a rudder on the ship.  In that parlance, a ship without a rudder will get exactly where it is going…by happenstance and chance.  That is not how a TRUE LEADER lives his life, without a rudder.

By no means do I have the determination and dedication that Grisham and DREDD have but I would like to share with you some of the ways I am trying to become a better leader by adding CONTEXT into my life.

With Jesus:

Reading two chapters per day in the New Testament.  CONTEXT: I keep my Bible at the ready and it is one of the first things I touch when I get up in the morning.  This doesn’t make me any better than anyone else or any less susceptible to sinning than anyone else. What it does for me is that with that under my belt, no matter how my day goes, how many times I fail or how many nut shots I take I started my day with the most important relationship I have.

Goal:  is that I have a deeper relationship with Jesus

Leslie:

If Les and I aren’t sympatico then no other earthly relationship will be as fruitful.  CONTEXT: Leslie and I have a meeting scheduled every Monday morning after the kids are on the bus.  In our meeting we review the week past, look at calendars that need to be synced, go over the activities for the week and I check in with Leslie on how she is and what she needs.  This forces me to be intentional about my most important earthly relationship, my marriage. Check out the most recent 43 Feet podcast and listen to DREDD and Dark Helmet’s thoughts.

Goal in this relationship is to have a deep, meaningful marriage with the added desire to emulate for my boys how to love their wife well and for my daughter to show her what it looks like to be loved well by her husband.

Physical Fitness:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, in the case of a sudden cabin depressurization, oxygen masks will drop from the ceiling.  Please place the mask over your face first before you help anyone traveling with you.” Odd concept of the servant leader to help HIMself first, but the point is that you must first take care of yourself before you can take care of others.  CONTEXT I set my alarms on my phone and rarely if ever turn them off. I also have an alarm set on my watch. Lastly, purely by coincidence my push notification for the Bible verse of the day hits at 0445. I am not immune to kids getting sick, to early morning meetings and being down range, too much bourbon and life happening but I have CONTEXT in place to minimize those intrusions.  I am controlling what I can control through CONTEXT. Goal in this part of my life is fitness, fellowship, sticking around a long time for the kids and being a part of the F3 movement to reinvigorate male leadership in our communities.

Parting Shot:

As I write this, I am realizing there are other areas of my life where I am not accelerating…maybe it is time for me to own those areas as well and add some CONTEXT to these areas I claim are important.  Fiscal responsibility, my Queen, my relationship with my dad are the three that come to mind right off the bat. By way of writing this out, I am inviting all of yall that are reading this to ask me what I am doing in those areas as well.

Where do you need CONTEXT in your life?

March 12th Man CLARITY

CLARITY

Def: The quality or state of being clear; Lucidity: Clearness of thought or style, a presumed capacity to perceive the truth directly and instantaneously.

This essay has been a bit tougher to write than last week’s entry on DISRUPTION.  Possibly because I am still drilling down on my CLARITY and possibly because there is a bit of spiritual warfare taking place in my midst.  Just as Ebola and Grease Trap displayed True Leadership going through times of DISRUPTION, this week’s focus is on a PAX that displays what I refer to as the 1st C, CLARITY that comes only after we have been disrupted.  CLARITY of why, CLARITY of who, CLARITY of how and CLARITY of what.

When I think of CLARITY, I think about MISSION, as defined in Q Source as Service in the high impact zone (Q2.3).  A High Impact Man, a HIM, lives in this Zone.

Think for a minute about the story of the Israelites who wandered in the desert for 40 years.  The reality is, even with a group that size, they probably could have made the trip in a matter of weeks but without a course of action taken to achieve an articulated purpose, they wandered.  (Q2.3). Obviously, God had a plan and a course of action and a why for their wandering but they didn’t have any CLARITY for it whatsoever.

When most people encounter DISRUPTION, there is no clear path, only the fog of war and the chaos of not knowing.  As we become TRUE LEADERS in these times of DISRUPTION, our target comes into view.  I believe it is this view of our target that gives us CLARITY and puts us on MISSION.

To me, the truer meaning of CLARITY comes from LUCIDITY, a presumed capacity to perceive the truth.

Most of you know Funyuns as a GoRuck’n beast, a guy that gets up and gets after it around 0445 most mornings and the former site Q for Racetrack.  I want to tell yall how he has demonstrated CLARITY to me and is a TRUE LEADER.  I first met Funyuns at our Memorial Day Modified Murph in 2015, he was an FNG.  So how about that, a dude shows up on his off day from work to get better with a group of guys he didn’t know outside of his EH, Baltic Predator.  (Side note, BP had been sidelined with Thyroid cancer and bad knees from his time in the NFL.) So here Funyuns shows up and lays it all out there with us.  Fast forward to 2019 and Funyuns has been one the HIMest HIMs we have, leading, serving, EH’ing and living out F3.

About a year into our friendship, Funyuns shared some of the details about his DISRUPTION.  That DISRUPTION which we won’t cover here has led to many positive outcomes for Funyuns as well as those of us who know him…whether we realize that or not.  I argue that the most important outcome of that DISRUPTION was CLARITY.

Leadership traits I experience through my brotherhood with Funyuns…

His Relationship with his Maker (WHY):

Funyuns has a deep love for Jesus and knows that any CLARITY he will ever live in comes through a daily walk with the Lord.  My man Funyuns is a deep reader of God’s word and communicator with God throughout the ritual of daily prayer.

If you don’t have an open line of communication with your Maker, you won’t have CLARITY and you won’t lead well.  Why? We are designed to be in relationship.

His Relationship with his Family (WHO):

Funyuns loves his wife Jaclyn and his baby girls Mary Michael and Lela.  This sounds like a pretty low bar but man if you have ever spent any time with Funyuns you know his devotion to them.  This devotion emanates from Funyuns in how he talks about them and how he serves them.

If you aren’t loving those well that you are in proximity to (your WHO), if you don’t have CLARITY around the “Die to Self” mentality they need, how can you be a servant leader at work, at F3, in your community or in your place of worship?  Those of you who ascribe to my particular worldview can think of the ultimate HIM who laid down his life for us.

His Relationship with his Friends (WHO pt 2):

What does true friendship look like to you?  Do you have a crystalline definition of true friendship on your heart?  Are your true friends faces burned in your mind’s eye? That’s it for me, it is easier for me to see those HIM in my mind as opposed to defining them with you know, words.  When I think about the true friends I have, Funyuns would be on my Mt. Rushmore. You all know the benchmarks to friendship…Borrow your Vehicle > Help you move > Advice on work > Pray over You (getting a bit more real now).  What about that HIM that asks you the hard questions? Do you have that guy on your team? What about the guy that gets in there where the dark stuff is? You got him too? You have to get clear on who those HIM are that get beyond the surface, the ones that are deeper than a rain puddle and Funyuns has done that.  He is that 2 AM call for some of us and when you get CLARITY, you will be that 2 AM call for others.

His Relationship with his Work (WHAT):

What does CLARITY in terms of work tell us about leadership?  How has Funyuns CLARITY with his work taught me about leadership?  I will share that with you through a quick example.  Last winter, Funyuns and Big Bang were training for a custom F3 Heavy.  Those dudes were crushing regular F3Nashville and F3Franklin AOs after doing their own 45-60 minute Pre-Parties.  As a follower of Funyuns on Strava, I would see regular posts of 12 Mile solo Rucks on Sunday mornings. Those solo Rucks are the loneliest of the lonely and he did them week after week because he had the CLARITY of crushing the F3 Heavy in NC.

Great story, how does CLARITY in work come into play?  Well about a week before the Startex, Funyuns partner/employer had a family emergency.  No big deal, his bossman would be back in time for Funyuns to clown car over to NC with Big Bang.  Only that he wasn’t, he was delayed and that put Funyuns in a pickle. No big deal, Funyuns could head out for one weekend, the techs on his team could handle the office, his friends in the industry would be on call for any emergency that came up.  But no, Funyuns CLARITY was devoted to his work, to his goal of buying the practice, to his years of dedication and skill building.  As someone who has had to bag out on a Big Hairy Audacious GORUCK event, I can assure you losing out on this event was weighing on him.  There would be other HTLs, other GORUCK events, a STARCOURSE to crush.

A lesser man, a MASCOT would have put in the B team, called in some favors but not Funyuns.  He sacrificed a short term, albeit badass event, for the long term right thing to do.  The leadership lesson that Funyuns confirmed for me here was that you don’t use short term information to get CLARITY on long term decisions.

CLARITY is a result of DISRUPTION, great leaders are true to their MISSION when their behavior exhibits adherence to the following (HOW):

  1. An open, ongoing dialogue with your Maker through the study of the scriptures and through prayer
  2. Loving and serving well those you are in proximate relationship with
  3. Being that 2 AM phone call guy
  4. Favoring the dedication to the long term goal over the feel good use of short term information…not letting the short term cloud the long term

PARTING SHOT: Can you be on MISSION without CLARITY?

March 12th Man DISRUPTION

DISRUPTION

Def: The opposite of stasis and the status quo…DREDD refers to disruption in F1 as the key to influencing movement to advantage.  In this scenario, the LEADER is the Agent of Disruption; I would like to take a different perspective and look at DISRUPTION from another vantage point in this post.  As a reader of this post, I hazard a guess that you fancy yourself a LEADER.  In that case, how as a LEADER do you (or I for that matter) respond in the face of DISRUPTION?

As a disrupter, you … “Initiate Movement” – DREDD  or “Take the High Ground before the High Ground takes you” – JOCKO.

Those quotes are apropos and words to live by when you are taking the fight to the enemy, when you are in flow with LEADERSHIP. What happens when you aren’t the AGENTS OF DISRUPTION but rather the subjects or recipients of DISRUPTION?  In those times, your response is where the GoRuck, GROWRuck, CSAUP, your Qs are worth their proverbial weight in gold.

As you read this, think of a time when you have been the subject of DISRUPTION.  Travel to that place for a few minutes with me and allow me to hit you with this:

TRUE LEADERSHIP IS FORGED IN US DURING TIMES OF DISRUPTION

This concept has been on my mind for quite some time.  As I reflected upon the HIM among us that have really drawn me in during their DISRUPTION I landed on two specifically (I know there are many others just as exemplary) to illustrate how they taught me TRUE LEADERSHIP in the face of DISRUPTION.  I will close with what I have learned over the last 7 months as a 43 year old father of three and husband of one without a job who is awaiting the next chapter to be opened.

PAX – EBOLA

DISRUPTION – Job opportunity of a Lifetime in North Carolina.

I have known EBOLA for a long time, probably as long as anyone I am close to in F3 going back at least 7 or 8 years.  The first thing I can say about EBOLA is that he is a HIM amongst HIM. This is not his first dance with the quick footed partner of disruption and certainly won’t be his last.  And although he’s been to many a DISRUPTION rodeo and been thrown at each time, he has managed to dust HIMself off and get back after it each time.

The first lesson I learned from EBOLA is that he has a strong and deep faith; EBOLA has leaned into that faith as he waded through this big, life changing DISRUPTION.

Secondly, EBOLA knows who he is, how the Sky Q has designed HIM and who he is here to serve.  So, to rip off “The Rock” EBOLA knows his role and knows there is NO ONE else that can play that role.

Lastly, EBOLA has a mission to complete and the first target has been identified for him.  All of us will have a mission to complete (should we choose to enlist). For most of us it will look different than anyone else’s mission.

What I learned about LEADERSHIP from EBOLA in the midst of DISRUPTION: faith, role and mision are the keys to success.

PAX – Grease Trap

Disruption – The loss of his oldest child, Job

If you have been around F3Nashville or F3Franklin for any amount of time, you have likely heard a bit of Grease Trap’s story, and that he and Katie lost Job late in the summer of 2017.  Let me stop for a quick sec, we didn’t “lose” Job, he simply went home ahead of us and is there now working on some sweet BATMAN artwork to share with us all.

So, how did the battle Job fought with cancer and his reunion with Jesus teach me leadership through Grease Trap?  There are some HIM I know that emit grace but let me assure you, there are none that did it then and continue to emit grace like Grease Trap.  The way he continued to pursue Jesus and at the same time continue to pursue the HIM of F3Nashville and F3Franklin is a study in true servant leadership.  Grease Trap did these things while continuing to serve Katie, love his family well and run a very successful business. His needs, while many, during the summer of 17 always seemed to pale in comparison to how well he loved Job, Katie, Zeke and Penny.

Grease Trap’s singular goal was to get Job well.  He was always thinking of Job, Katie and the family while continuing to seek a brotherhood to protect and provide for him, to strengthen him and to give him rest.  The grace, vulnerability, passion and purpose Grease Trap showed us all that summer is true leadership and that continues today as Job’s memory lives on.

What I learned about LEADERSHIP from Grease Trap in the midst of DISRUPTION: You  must be others focused, knowing you are not alone that there is a fellowship that seeks to protect you and you must live a life full of purpose.

PAX – Bagger Vance

DISRUPTION – leaving multiple jobs seeking the silver bullet to success

As some of you may know, I left my job this past July with no back up plan, no options, and nothing even remotely on the horizon work wise.  I’d like to say I am like William Borden  but that just isn’t the case.

This self induced disruption has taught me vast amounts about leadership, here are some of my takeaways:

God is in Control…true leadership is making the next right decision based upon the choices in front of you while staying target focused and goal oriented.  We have to surrender our will to God’s plan for our lives. I used to say that I was guilty of pushing God aside to grab the typewriter so I could crank out a few lines of my story, telling Him to add them to the chapter.  How foolish?! It wasn’t until recently that I realized the story had already been written (with NO EDITS), printed and published…it is up to me to play the unique role only I can play.

Leslie (and my children) need my attention, consideration and provision (not always financial).  I was unable to die to myself until my identity (insert the jobs I have had ever since more money became my idol) was torched.  This burning of the boats forced me into one of two corners…self pity (the doldrums of the Mascot) or selflessness (the goal of the HIM).  By the Grace of God, I chose selflessness and man did it SUCK at the beginning. Over time, I realized I had no choice but to die to myself and completely surrender to Jesus.  This allows me to walk fully, faithfully and finally with Him.

My biggest idol is comparison and competition.  I finally realized, though I still struggle with it daily that comparison and competition is about as life giving as a steady diet of Doughnuts, Frappe Mochachino Lattes and porn.  Real leadership is leveraging yourself to serve others, to elevate them to the places they aspire to be, i.e. to a position of advantage.

In my own DISRUPTION, this is what I learned about LEADERSHIP – Someone Bigger than me is in control.  Provision for those closest to you allows you to truly come alive.  If you’re not a servant first, you will never be a true leader.

I hope this helps as you come face to face with DISRUPTION in your life.  Or as you are coming through DISRUPTION.  Or as you round the corner to  DISRUPTION.

PARTING SHOT: As LEADERS, should we seek circumstantial disruption or circumstances that will DISRUPT us and welcome that into our lives?

TIME

NMM: Nice work this am Men. Pleasure to be with yall. So, as I Q, I have been trying to do several things 1) doing partner or group work 2) honoring a fallen HERO by way of a HERO WOD.

The reason for the former is that I have come to believe that while life can be lived as a SINGLETON, that isn’t God’s design. In Genesis we are told that God saw Man was alone, it was not good for Man to be alone so He made Woman…Ezer Kenegdo…a helper suitable. In the Gospels, Jesus sends out his disciples in pairs.

The reason for the latter, it has been on my heart the last several years that We owe so much to the brave men and women in the Armed Forces here in the States as well as around the world for their selfless defense of our Freedom. Regardless of your political leanings or stance on War, we need Brave men and women sacrificing their lives for our protection.

Red Skull, per your question, Rabbit was my third Merlot Splash in Nashville. I don’t count Third Person’s multiple, almost on demand Splashes. When we launched Memphis in August of ‘17 there was so much Splashing you would have thought they were launching an Ayahuasca commune.

BH:
Authentic Manhood Study w Red Skull tomorrow AM 0745-0900
First Friday Lunch tomorrow at Cookery 1130-?
FNG Friday next Friday

Bagger Vance
