COT:
A game recently sold 6.45 million copies in its pre-sales. Any guesses on which video game did this? GTA 6. A recent survey said 1.5 million people will take off work to play it, and over 500,000 people took 3 or more days off work for it. I love video games but can’t imagine taking 3 vacation days for a single game. I dont want to think of how many hours will be put into that game the first week it launches.
Let me ask you this..how many hours does it take to master a skill? Answer: 10,000 hours. Did you know the average adult male spends 5-6.5 hours a day on entertainment that involves a screen (averages around 3 hours on TV or streaming & 2 hours gaming on their phone) with totals around 18,262.5 hours in 10 years. As we discussed, it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. In 10 years, they have spent almost 3 years of their life mastering whatever entertainment they enjoy twice.
Pastor Josh Howerton recently said in a sermon, “The easiest way to waste your life is to succeed at things that do not matter.”
Entertainment is not inherently evil but it easily becomes an idol that steals our time from God or the once’s we love.
When you find yourself wanting to get on a screen ask yourself.
1. Am I addictive to it?
AKA: Have I found myself doing it without being able to stop? I say I don’t have a problem but can’t go a weekend without it.
2. What skill am I learning? Will this matter 6 months from now?
3. Is this making me a better person or am I able to use it to better someone else?
4. Most importantly, am it glorifying God or simply doing it for my pleasure?
Challenge: Take a three-day fast on some type of entertainment. You might say I’m not addicted, but can’t you live a weekend without it.
